Build a Boat (Colton Dixon ft. Gabby Barrett)
Build a Boat
This week’s featured song, Build a Boat, is a collaboration between singer-songwriter Colton Dixon and singer-actress Gabby Barrett.
Build a Boat is based on a tale you might know: ‘Noah’s Ark’, from a book in The Bible entitled Genesis. Noah was a good man who lived a life that pleased God in a dark and corrupt world. God warned Noah about a flood that would end this world and advised Noah to build an ark that would save his life. This was not a tiny ark that Noah needed to build, but one that would also save the lives of his family and selected pairs of living creatures. By historical estimates, completing this boat may have taken Noah 75-100 years.
Noah could not see the floodwaters at the time of God’s warning, and the task ahead of him was huge. He needed to have faith (belief and hope in something without seeing it), strength and courage to act on God’s warning and keep building over 75 years.
Build a Boat reveals that we all face times when we must keep going —keep building; keep preparing; even when the world is dark, even when others may not believe in us, even when we don’t see the flood waters in our lives, but know we still need to work towards our goals because the flood will appear one day. In an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), songwriter Colton Dixon described the song as being about “having faith even in a dry season”.
When we have faith and keep our actions and attitudes aligned with love, God is with us, even during the difficult times in our lives.
